Retrieving Valuables From a Sink Drain

Oh shoot, your ring slipped off and went down the sink drain! We are sure everyone has experienced this feeling at least once in their life.
Earrings, necklaces, and other valuables hopelessly slipping down the dark abyss of the sink drain (cats are common criminals for swatting shiny objects down the drain). But don’t worry, RR Calgary is here to help with some useful tips and tricks for retrieving your valuables back to you.

The Coat Hanger

Primitive? Yes. Effective? Also Yes!
It seems a bit goofy at first, but if you straighten out a coat hanger to the best of your ability, you should be able to feel around for your lost item. For small items like small non-hoop earnings, this is probably ineffective. However, it does work for larger items like toothbrushes and most larger hooped items like necklaces.

Open Up The Pipes

Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it may sound at first. Anyone can take their sink apart to retrieve a lost item within the drain.
  • Step 1

    Turn off the water.

  • Step 2

Put an item underneath the sink plug so it stays open.

  • Step 3

Place a bucket under the sink plumbing to collect the water as it falls out.

  • Step 4

Unscrew the J-pipe from the end closest to the sink and the side closest to the wall.

  • Step 5

Dump the water from that pipe into the bucket and check for your missing item

If your treasure is not seen in the water bucket, it could be jammed in the P-trap (ironically the J-shaped pipe). The quick solution for this is a magnetic tool to retrieve any metal item that is not gold or silver. You can find these little guys at your local hardware store and have other fantastic uses around the house for getting stuff from under couches and other hard to reach areas. If you can snag it out of there make sure to give it a good wash!

Give us a Call!

If the methods above have not worked out, it is time to call RR Calgary.
DO NOT USE YOUR SINK! If you do, there is a chance your item could be swept away into the water system and gone forever. Instead of grieving over your lost item, sit back, relax, and let us take care of it for you.
